When you’re in the process of moving, there’s nothing more frustrating than trying to fit a large, heavy piece of furniture through a doorway only to realize that—oops!—it doesn’t fit. This will have you mumbling all kinds of four-letter words under your breath as you try everything to get your furniture through the door. Below you can find a few strategies to help you move big furniture pieces through small doorways with relative ease.
Measure the furniture and doorway first
Before you try to move a large piece of furniture through a doorway, take a minute to measure both the furniture and the doorway to make sure it’s going to fit. The numbers won’t lie, and if you find the furniture is too large for the doorway you can save yourself a great deal of time and effort by looking for another entrance that will be better able to accommodate large objects.
Come up with a plan of attack
You may have to get creative when it comes time to move a bulky piece of furniture through a doorway. The furniture might not fit if you try to walk it right through the doorway, but it could very well fit if you turn it on an angle or flip it on its side. Try to come up with a good strategy before you take your furniture off the truck.
Consider disassembling the furniture
Is there any way to take your large furniture apart to make it more manageable? You might be able to take the legs off a couch to make it fit through a doorway, for example. You might also be able to turn a big entertainment center into three smaller pieces by unscrewing the different sections of it. This can make it much easier to move large pieces of furniture without damaging walls and doorways in the process.
Make sure you have enough help
The more people you have to lend a hand, the easier it will be to move large pieces of furniture. It may be much simpler to move, say, a heavy sectional when you have three or four people surrounding it than it would be if you only had one person at each end.
