First Steps to Take When Moving Into a New Home

Unpacking BoxesMoving into a new home is an exciting experience, but it can also be pretty overwhelming if you don’t have a clear plan in place. By making a list of the things you need to after moving in, you can keep everything more organized and make your move a total success. Here are just a few steps to take when moving into a new home.

Change the locks on exterior doors.

When you move into a new home, you should always change the locks on any exterior doors to ensure the home is safe and secure. Even if the previous owners provided you with their keys, you never know who else might have a spare key to the home. By changing the locks right away, you can prevent anyone else from gaining access to your new house.

Clean your new home thoroughly.

The previous owners of your home probably tried to leave it in good condition for you, but they may not have gone above and beyond to clean it completely before they moved out. Before you start unpacking boxes and arranging furniture, devote a few hours to cleaning carpets and flooring, wiping down countertops and other surfaces, and making your new home as clean as possible.

Clearly label each room in the home.

When you were moving things out of your old home, you probably packed them up in boxes and labeled them according to their contents and destinations. As such, it’s a good idea to make sure those boxes land in the right rooms when they get to your new home. Label each room with a sign conspicuously placed over the doorway so that movers and family members know where to put everything as soon as they arrive.
